Manyung Fish Maw: Nutritious, Delicious, and Inexpensive

Manyung fish is a marine fish that is commonly caught and salted as a specialty fish from Pangandaran called jambal roti. The utilization of this fish is quite extensive, especially in the North Coast of Java. Manyung fish is a type of marine fish. Its name is also known as sea cat fish. Manyung fish are similar to baung fish that live in freshwater. However, its mouth is more forward and its eyeballs are larger. The spines of the manyung's pectoral fins are sharp, so they can hurt the hand. But don't worry, the spines are not poisonous. 

Manyung fish are distributed in the tropics to subtropics. Its habitat is not always in the open sea, but it can also live between river estuaries to the coast. In fact, manyung fish are also often found in shallow places, black sandy and muddy sea coasts. Manyung fish will be active at night, feeding on young fish, shrimp and mollusks. 

1.1 Manyung Fish

Manyung fish has many benefits, such as curing joint pain, increasing platelets, maintaining skin health, reducing symptoms of diabetes mellitus, reducing obesity, overcoming malnutrition, preventing stroke, and increasing appetite.

Manyung fish is commonly used as salted fish called jambal roti. To make pickled jambal roti, it requires a hefty capital. Fresh manyung fish costs around Rp 50,000 per kilo. So the price of the raw materials alone is quite expensive. For 1 kilo of manyung fish to be made into jambal roti, the weight is only about 300 grams. So there is a weight loss of 70%. If calculated, 1 kilo of jambal roti is equal to 3 kilos of manyung fish, so the price of asinan jambal roti should be Rp 150,000. This is more expensive than beef.

1.2 Manyung Fish's Fish Maw

In addition to its meat as salted fish, as mentioned earlier, manyung fish head can be curried, mangut, or smoked. It is a specialty of the north coast of Java (Pantura). Manyung fish eggs can be pepes and the fish bubble (fish maw) can also be consumed.

Ikan Manyung or Jambal Roti, has a fish maw that is estimated to be the cheapest ever found in the e-commerce market. Some sell it for Rp 150,000 per 250 grams, some for Rp 20,000 per 50 grams, and the most expensive is around Rp 215,000 per 500 grams. The price per kilogram can reach Rp 400-500 thousand. But for the price in the fishermen's market, manyung fish maw can reach a price of Rp 1 million, and per 100 grams can be worth Rp 10 million.
