Fish Maw of Pufferfish: Is it Dangerous?

Fish maw is a favorite among the Chinese people. No wonder they also favor foods that seem extreme to eat. Some time ago when there was a plague that was rampant throughout the country, it was discovered that it came from the country, because in the meat market, there were many animals that were not commonly eaten by humans, such as rats, dogs, snakes, monkeys, and so on. For fish, one of them is the poisonous puffer fish. Let's talk about puffer fish.

The puffer fish or fugu fish is one of the deadly poisonous fish species in the world. This fish has characteristics that are quite unique compared to others. The puffer fish has the ability to inflate its body and bring out sharp poisonous spines as a form of defense.

1.1 Puffer Fish

Although famous for being poisonous, puffer fish is actually one of the favorite dishes in several restaurants in Japan and China. Many restaurants provide puffer fish food menus for guests. However, the cooking method certainly cannot be arbitrary and needs to be done by professional cooks.

Puffer fish is known to have deadly poison. This is because the body contains as many as 30 toxins that can even take human lives. The puffer fish will inflate its body and release poison from its skin when it is under threat.

1.2 Puffer Fish's Fish Maw

The poison contained in puffer fish is called tetrodotoxin poison, which is considered thousands of times more dangerous than cyanide. This poison can cause muscle paralysis, numbness, dizziness, heart failure, and death. To date, there is no antidote that can overcome the poison in the body of puffer fish. Therefore, it is one of the deadliest fish in the world.

If there is even the slightest mistake in its processing, humans can lose their lives. This delicious dish can turn into a deadly poison if processed carelessly without obtaining special certificates and permits.

Puffer fish is usually quite expensive. Even more so, if the puffer fish has become a cooking ingredient. Because, puffer fish processing is not easy and must be done by trained cooks.

In Japan, more than 6 tons of puffer fish are sold at 15,000 yen or the equivalent of Rp 2 million for one kilogram of puffer fish. The price has decreased by 25% compared to the normal price.

The price of puffer fish maw is quite expensive than expected, just like the price of fish meat when we eat at restaurants. This fish maw can sell for around Rp 1.8 million for all sizes, depending on the weight.

It must be handled properly by an expert, otherwise it can be very dangerous. Even so, are you interested in trying fish maw from this one fish?
